Introduction to Shop Tools - Year 1

Freshman - 1 semester course / 0.5 credits

 

Home Improvement – Year 2

Home Improvement is a course that focuses on construction safety. Students will learn hand tool safety, power tool safety, and terminology used with construction.  The students will use the Construction Lab area to complete the safe use of tools that they have learned from lectures and demonstrations. The hands-on experiences will involve construction of small projects that show the skills they have learned. Students will receive a balanced curriculum that includes creative and critical thinking skills, construction communication skills, and knowledge that can be applied in the real world.  The students will also learn tasks that most homeowners would like to complete themselves but lack the knowledge and training to complete. 

 

Construction Trades – Year 3

Construction Trades is a course where students will build on the concepts and skills learned in the Home Improvement course. Students will develop advanced knowledge, skill level, and procedures of the construction industry. Course work will be a combination of research of tools, materials, and techniques of construction as well as hands-on projects including structures such as garages, sheds and decks. OHS construction trades will also team up with Habitat for Humanity and other external partners/organizations in hopes of helping the community and working on new home or home restoration projects. Students will receive a balanced curriculum that includes creative and critical thinking skills, with a balance of estimating, and real-life business operation skills. 

 

Advanced Construction – Year 4

This extension course of Construction Trades where students will utilize advanced concepts and skills learned in the Home Improvement/Construction Trades courses. Students will apply advanced knowledge, advanced skill levels, and procedures of the construction industry. Course work will be a combination of research of tools, materials, and techniques of construction as well as hands-on projects including structures such as pole barns, garages, and decks. Students will receive a balanced and rigorous extended curriculum that includes creative and critical thinking skills, reflection pieces, communication and presentation skills, and knowledge that can be applied in the real world. 

Students in this course will be given a foreman position overseeing various job duties and responsibilities related to the field of construction and construction management. Additionally, students will be required to complete the OSHA 30-hour certification training. Students will have a potential opportunity to earn pre-licensure hours going towards the State of Michigan Builders License. Third year students will be combined with first and/or second year students to facilitate mentoring and foreman responsibilities overseeing projects.

Construction Crew Leader– Year 4

Extension of Construction Trades - Construction Crew Leader students will be placed within the 2 hr construction trades block and will be asked to be lead carpenters. These students will help with all aspects of construction, from planning, permits, layout, construction and finish.  

Construction Crew Leader students will utilize advanced concepts and skills learned in the Home

Improvement/Construction Trades courses. Students will apply advanced knowledge, advanced skill levels, and procedures of the construction industry. Course work will be a combination of research of tools, materials, and techniques of construction as well as hands-on projects including structures such as pole barns, garages, and decks. Construction Crew Leader students will also have the opportunity to complete OSHA 30 hr certification and be encouraged to work on pre-licensure hours towards the State of Michigan builders license.
